نیا سال مبارک ہو || Happy New Year

Like most things, 2016 has come to an end. We wave goodbye and move on to another year, alhumdullilah {Praise be to Allah (subhanahu-wa-ta’ala)}. I won’t say it’s been the best year, because it hasn’t, but I also won’t say it’s been the worst. One minute you’re celebrating the start of a new year, and then the next, you’re celebrating the end of the one that you were just celebrating the start of, and vice versa. Whatever happens as of today, make the most of it – pick up a new book, compliment a stranger, learn a new surah (chapter) of the Holy Qur’an, meet up with an old friend. Just don’t let this year go to waste. If you’re stuck in the same routine, be daring and try something different. Take your camera and go on a wild photography session, bake a triple-layered cake, take your sibling and go for a long drive, come home to your loved ones – tell them how much they mean to you. Some people don’t even get that, you know, they wait and wait for their brother or sister or parent(s) to come home knowing full well they won’t.

Take a moment, every day, to think about those less fortunate than you, and thank the Almighty for His continuous blessings. The roof above your head, the food on your plate, the family that always showers you with infinite love.

Trust in Him, and know that God has the best of plans for you. I didn’t get what I wanted this year, and now when I look back, I can see why – He had something better planned. I lost and let go of a few close friends but knew it was for my own good – He will never leave you alone. I tried to try new things but new always laughs back at me – so I’m going to try them again (ha!) in the new year, insha’Allah {if Allah (subhanahu-wa-ta’ala) wills}.

Don’t worry yourself so much, this life is simple but we make it difficult, don’t overthink about things for too long (something I do too much), and finally, love yourself. How are you meant to love anyone else when you’re so angry and upset about the way that you are? If you’re going to make any change in the new year, make it one that’ll save you first, then try saving the World. You need as much care as the World does.

The saying is true then, that the person you met on the 1st of January 2015 will not be the same person you meet on the 1st of January 2016. They have grown, and so have you. That growth excites me, but also scares me a little. May we all grow for the better. Aameen.

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ — [البقرة :201]

Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil ‘akhirati hasanatan waqina ‘adhaban-nar — Our Lord! Grant us good in this world and good in the hereafter, and save us from the chastisement of the fire — [2:201]
